Hello, my name is Amanda!

From time to time I will find myself in different situations where people will ask me to tell them about myself. Phrases like 'what do you do for work?', 'what do you do for fun?', 'what was your childhood like?', and 'tell me about yourself!' come at me in both written and verbal forms. I don't know why I always find myself stumped and at a loss for words whenever I'm faced with having to answer back to "Tell me about yourself!". Even the "About Me" section of my blog here is lacking, and it's not laziness, no, it's rather how am I supposed to fit everything that constitutes 'me' into a tiny paragraph. OR, when someone asks me to tell them about myself, how am I supposed to condense everything that makes up a big portion of me into a short enough response as to not to bore them to death, sound full of myself, or sound like I'm rambling?
Another reason I think why I tend to get stumped is because I quickly scan through my brain wondering what information to share and what not to share, what facts about me would be considered actually interesting and what wouldn't be, and also the person in question who is asking you this - are they looking for a specific answer? (example : if you're in a job interview). Basically, I don't really fit into any 'niche' as I'm kind of all over the place in the sense of where I have a lot of passions, interests, and I didn't come from a normal cookie-cutter family background, so I've had a lot of different experiences and have been exposed to all sorts of interesting things, thus the development of my variety of interests and passions. I find the older I get, the more I tap into me, and what makes me me. After all, we're always growing, evolving, changing, and along the way we need to discover or re-discover the things that make us happy, but also discover who we really are! So.........allow me to share with you a little bit about me!
Hmm, where to begin? Let's start with family. I grew up in a family of six ; Mom, Dad, and three brothers. Yes, growing up as the only girl had it's perks, but also it's downs. I am the second youngest of us. Being born in 1983 was the best because growing up in the 80s and 90s was prime nostalgia! With my oldest brother being 38, and youngest 25, I grew up with every Nintendo or game system. We had the usual sibling rivalry but we would take it to the next level from time to time, and it always got ugly. Real ugly. I'm talking serious violence, and our house was always that one house on the block that had a cop car at it regularly. Did all this help me grow up to be tougher and more strong? Absolutely!
My Dad is from Guyana, South America, and my Mom is from Canada....she's a mix of Dutch, Irish, Scottish, and German, so basically a mutt. I just call her white, or Caucasian to be politically correct, ha ha! I was born and raised here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but do I want to stay here my entire life? Probably not. I went to Guyana for the first time ever this past April and had an incredible time! Upon coming back I feel so much more cultured, and even closer to my Dad. Speaking of Dad......my Dad is the best, and I have nothing but mad love for that man. He is truly one of a kind, and everyone who meets him loves him. He is my homie without a doubt, and he never fails to make me laugh. Dad if you're reading this....wipe that tear up right quick because you know we don't cry ;)
I went to Catholic schools growing up, but in this city, that doesn't mean anything in terms of strictness or being rule abiding. After High School, like most, I had no idea what I wanted to do and basically just coasted and hit the bars like any young punk would do. Come to think of it, I still dont know of one thing exactly that I want to do career-wise. I'm very versatile, I'm interested in a lot of different things, and cannot just pick one thing. I went to school to study massage therapy and am currently working as a full time Registered Massage Therapist. I am also a Professional Make-Up Artist. I used to work as a Cake Decorator, and although I bake non-stop, I don't do cake decorating orders as much as I used to (I should probably get back into focusing on that some more again). I love to bake. Plain and simple. Baking is so therapeutic for me, and I just love creating tasting things for people. I own ten aprons! How many women do you know these days that even own one? Ha ha ha!
While we're on the topic of baking, I love sweets of course! I have a ridiculous sweet tooth - cookies and cake are my world. So is anything beauty and fashion related! Like any female, I love to shop. I really do. Retail therapy is the best kind, next to massage therapy of course, and planning and creating outfits and styles is just fun and fabulous! Being a Make-Up Artist goes hand in hand with fashion I think, and so naturally I love applying make-up for women, making them feel beautiful by bringing out their natural beauty, but also fun, trendy, glam make-up for women too! I'm a creative girl, so being able to unleash my creativity in different outlets like that is simply amazing and so much fun for me!
I'm a romantic, indefinitely. I see love in movies, on the streets, amongst my friends and their significant others and it just warms my heart like nothing else. Seriously, I cannot wait to be married one day. I am that girl who dreams about their wedding, and finding that perfect person for me - someone who will be my best friend, my love, and everything else in between. I love 'love'! Yes, "The Notebook" makes me swoon like a huge sap!
I love friendships and have a wonderful circle of amazing friends in my life.I am a car girl -between my 3 brothers and my Dad I have learned and appreciated so much about the mechanics of cars and the overall appearance. Between all of them, they know everything about cars, and Im just always trying to learn more and more. Two of my brothers are in auto body, and them plus my Dad know everything about the mechanics, so it's pretty awesome that I never really have to take my car to a shop. Also now that I know how to change my own oil, and have personally sanded and spray tinted my tail lights, and painted my calipers, I feel pretty darn proud. Along with a love for nice cars, fast cars, comes the famous lead foot of mine - speeding tickets become more of a common occurrence for me than most. Yes, I'm ashamed.
I believe in spirits, and stories about hauntings and exorcisms fascinate me but creep me right out. Basically, I like to scare myself. Horror movies don't scare me however, I'm pretty immune that way, but I absolutely love watching them. I love documentaries, and comedies too, especially the old school ones from my childhood. Nothing beats some good old Adam Sandler, or Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber. Love the newer stuff too though; anyone who knows me knows that I can't get enough of 'Harold and Kumar ', 'Super Troopers', and 'Napoleon Dynamite'. I'm not much of a television watcher, but I was addicted to the(and still am) Sex and The City series, and I do love 'The Walking Dead'.
When I'm trying to be a good girl and stay healthy and try keep fit I do like to exercise routinely, and run. Okay, 'like' is a lie. Do I enjoy exercising? Nope, not really. But when I'm done it, I'm glad I did, and I feel great. As a matter of fact I have always been a very healthy conscious person, even from when I was a little girl, always trying to eat right, and stay healthy and in shape. Tell me how that part of me can have a symbiotic relationship with the baking part of me. How it works I'll never know, but I love it.
As for hobbies, passions, things I hate, things I like, things that make me smile..............well let's see..............
I love music ; r&b, hip-hop, reggae, reggaeton, soca, jazz, classical, rock, I like reading and writing, drinking wine, Caribbean rum, summer time, the color pink, anything coconut, wearing lipstick, chewing bubblegum, and bubblegum flavored ice cream, rims, pedicures. I hate bad manners, and can't stand rednecks and racist assholes. I like amusement parks, hiking, campfires, ice skating, rollerblading, UFC, horseplay, and being double dared. I love being at the beach but I cannot swim (never stopped me from boogie boarding in Honolulu once without a life jacket though - dumb and risky, yes I know, but soooo much fun). I love wearing high heels, but I also enjoy my kicks. I love fashion period, but especially Fall fashion because there's nothing like Fall colored warm knit sweaters/cardigans, sexy boots, scarves and tights. I love biographies, especially Audrey Hepburn and Bob Marley - I think Bob Marley is king! I love flowers, giving and receiving them. I love doing things for people including strangers, just to make them smile. I like creativity, art, style, meeting wonderful inspiring people, traveling, doing spontaneous fun things. New York is my heart, and I hope to live there part time some day because that city is so alive and amazing, and full of everything and everyone. I don't speak any other languages but I would like to learn Spanish and Japanese one day. I love home decor and interior design. I love Caribbean cooking the most, and Vietnamese and Thai, and I believe good hot sauce can make almost any dish even better. I'm a stubborn Taurus, and I'm very organized. I am absolutely terrified of spiders, I have never broken a bone, and I can't wink (this one sucks when you're trying to flirt from afar). I can't stand green beans, raisins, cilantro, bamboo shoots, or turnips. I like drinking fancy lattes and biscotti. Chocolate milk is gold! Breakfast food is the BEST - I can eat it at any time of the day! I have an old soul and believe in a lot of old values. I love dogs but sadly am becoming allergic to them. I enjoy spending time with girlfriends, trying new restaurants, and checking out festivals, and taking each day as it comes.
I am someone who is self-motivated, strong-willed, and passionate. I have a warm heart and soul, I believe in karma, and I believe that we are all whatever we make of ourselves. I also believe in cookies. Lots and lots of cookies.......with a side of milk, and a side of cake, aaaand maybe throw in some more cookies just for good measure.....just in case.
